# How Long Does A New Boiler Installation Take? A Homeowner’s Guide

When your heating breaks down, it's a stressful experience for the whole household. Getting your home warm again quickly becomes a top priority. When faced with the prospect of a cold house, you naturally want the replacement sorted out as soon as possible.

[![Get in touch ](https://hubspot-no-cache-eu1-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/cta/default/148104347/interactive-387189316825.png)](https://www.argcontracts.co.uk/hs/cta/wi/redirect?encryptedPayload=AVxigLKIi3lLgHUh%2BWKLWZwnVxMFpCeSUR7YyYSAcwuwZV2e7%2F1oYrnekgGbsf%2BjMbkQkh9d%2FQJpLm8II9F8%2Fc0lbNiXvYcXY3NC5rai850a9X86qyn1BvVsTGntctJfxqYt%2FmFjBWC8QzP39BO7eXh5XJX4n7npsVA%2FEH2jSAAz12TJR%2Fp%2Bg6bVYNXYhlAETWsIvoLU9JsGtbG56n8wwDQsJFHE3GY%3D&webInteractiveContentId=387189316825&portalId=148104347)

It's no surprise that one of the first questions our engineers are asked is, ‘How long does a [new boiler installation](https://argcontracts.co.uk/combi-boiler-installation) take?’ After all, we know that inviting engineers into your home causes temporary disruption to your daily routine. The longer the work takes, the more disruptive it can be for your household.

As your local, owner-led heating specialist across Essex, Hertfordshire, and London, we believe in keeping our customers fully informed from the very beginning. Understanding the timeline helps you plan your schedule and ensures a smoother, less stressful process for everyone.

## **Understanding New Boiler Installation Time**

The new boiler installation time will vary depending on the type and complexity of the project.

Every home is different, and the current state of your heating setup plays a major role in the timeline. If you are wondering how long to install a new boiler, the best place to start is by looking at the type of system you currently have compared to the one you want.

Let's take a look at the factors at play:

- Like-for-like boiler replacements are often the quickest.
- Changing boiler type usually takes longer.
- Moving the boiler can add extra installation time.
- System preparation, testing, and commissioning can also affect the overall timeline.

### **Like-For-Like Boiler Replacements**

Replacing an existing boiler with the same type of boiler in the same location is usually the quickest scenario. This is known in the trade as a like-for-like swap.

If you are replacing an old combi boiler with a brand new combi boiler on the same kitchen wall, the existing pipework can sometimes be reused or easily adapted to fit the new connections.

A straightforward like-for-like replacement can often be completed within a day, although the exact timeframe will depend on the existing installation and whether any additional work is required.

### **Changing Your Boiler Type**

Changing from a [regular boiler](https://www.argcontracts.co.uk/blog/regular-boiler-vs-combi-boiler-guide) to a combi boiler will usually increase the installation time.

Older regular boiler systems may include a cold-water storage cistern in the loft and a hot-water cylinder elsewhere in the property. Converting to a combi can involve removing redundant components and altering the existing pipework to accommodate the new system.

Depending on the existing system and the work required, a conversion from a regular boiler to a combi may take around two to three days.

### **Moving The Boiler Location**

Sometimes, you might want to move your boiler to free up valuable kitchen space or hide it away in a utility room.

Moving a boiler can require alterations to gas, water, and heating pipework, as well as changes to the flue arrangement. The amount of additional work will depend on the new location and the layout of the property.

Depending on the complexity of the move, relocating the boiler may add additional time to the installation.

## **The Importance Of System Testing**

Regardless of how long the physical fitting takes, system testing is an essential part of every boiler installation.

A responsible heating engineer should allow sufficient time to complete these checks before the final handover. Once the boiler is mounted and the pipes are connected securely, thorough safety and performance checks should be completed before the final handover.

The engineer will carry out the appropriate safety, commissioning, and operational checks for the boiler and installation. Depending on the system and manufacturer requirements, this can include checking the gas supply, combustion performance, controls, and overall heating operation. The existing [heating system](https://www.argcontracts.co.uk/blog/how-often-should-you-replace-boiler) should also be appropriately cleaned and treated as part of the installation process.

Taking the time to complete these checks properly may add slightly to the installation time, but it is essential for confirming that the installation has been completed correctly and the heating system is operating as intended.

## **How You Can Prepare For Installation Day**

While our engineers handle the heavy lifting, a little preparation from you can help reduce disruption on installation day.

Clear access to work areas can support a smoother process. Moving furniture away from the boiler location, clearing out the airing cupboard if an old cylinder is being removed, and ensuring the route to the loft is clear can all help the team get straight to work. Small steps like these can help the engineers work efficiently and reduce unnecessary disruption during the installation.

At ARG Contracts, we pride ourselves on providing honest pricing and expert fitting. If you're wondering how long to install a new boiler in your particular property, we provide a realistic timeline during our initial survey, so you know what to expect before work begins. Every installation we complete is backed by a solid two-year guarantee, providing additional reassurance after the work is complete.
