Modern boilers are designed to be reliable, but like any hardworking appliance, they can develop faults over time. ### **1. Low Boiler Pressure**

Low boiler pressure is one of the [most common boiler problems](https://argcontracts.co.uk/combi-boiler-installation) we deal with. Your system needs to maintain steady water pressure (usually between 1.0 and 1.5 bar) to push hot water around your home.

If you look at the gauge on the front of your boiler and the needle has dropped into the red zone, your boiler will automatically shut down for safety.

Topping up the pressure using the filling loop underneath the boiler is a simple homeowner check. However, pressure loss is usually a recurring issue. If you find yourself repressurising the system every few weeks, this may be a sign that water is escaping somewhere.

Even if topping it up gets your heating back on temporarily, the root cause is usually a hidden leak under your floorboards or a failing internal expansion vessel. You'll need an expert to track down the true fault before it slowly and silently causes water damage to your property.

### **2. No Heating Or Hot Water**

No heating or hot water can result from a wide range of boiler faults. Before calling an engineer, there are a few simple checks you can safely carry out:

- Check whether the thermostat batteries need replacing.
- Make sure your boiler pressure is within the recommended range.
- Check whether the external condensate pipe has frozen during cold weather.

If you've worked through these checks but your boiler still won't fire up, the problem is likely to lie inside the casing. Common causes include:

- A broken diverter valve.
- A faulty printed circuit board (PCB).
- A broken pump.

A persistent drip can easily destroy the expensive electronic components inside the boiler casing. Leaks are typically caused by corroded pipes, worn-out rubber seals, or a faulty pressure valve.

### **4. Strange Kettling Noises**

Boilers should hum softly in the background. If yours starts making loud banging, whistling, or gurgling noises, it's a sign something isn't working as it should.

Gurgling usually indicates air is trapped inside the heating system. You can often solve this by bleeding your radiators to release the trapped air. However, if your boiler sounds like a boiling kettle, you have a bigger issue. This kettling noise happens when limescale builds up on the internal heat exchanger. Limescale restricts water flow through the heat exchanger, causing the water to boil and turn into steam. Identifying the cause early can help prevent further damage, as severe limescale buildup will eventually destroy the heat exchanger entirely.

When dealing with common boiler problems, there are a few safe steps you can take. Checking your pressure gauge, replacing thermostat batteries, and bleeding your radiators are all great starting points. You can also safely thaw a frozen external condensate pipe.

However, persistent or recurring faults usually require professional attention.

If you're constantly tweaking the pressure or bleeding air from the same radiator every week, these ongoing issues almost always indicate a deeper problem with the heating system. Treating the symptoms without identifying the underlying cause can eventually lead to a complete system breakdown.
